Goldthwaite, Anne

Anne Goldthwaite (June 28, 1869 – January 29, 1944) was an American painter and printmaker and an advocate of women's rights and equal rights. Goldthwaite studied art in New York City. She then moved to Paris where she studied modern art, including Fauvism and Cubism, and became a member of a circle that included Gertrude Stein, Henri Matisse, and Pablo Picasso. She was a member of a group of artists that called themselves Académie Moderne and held annual exhibitions. Back in the United States, she exhibited, along with other modern artists like Mary Cassatt, Vincent Van Gogh, Edgar Degas, and Claude Monet at the 1913 New York Armory Show. She set up residence in New York City and spent the summers with family in Montgomery, Alabama. She taught at Art Students League of New York for 23 years and during the summers, she was an instructor at the Dixie Art Colony. After returning from Paris, she accepted commissions for works of art and exhibited her paintings in New York City. She became known in the South for her scenes of post-slave rural African American life. Hendrick Goltzius (German: [ˈhɛndʁɪk ˈɡɔltsi̯ʊs], Dutch: [ˈɦɛndrɪk ˈxɔltsijʏs]; born Goltz; January or February 1558 – 1 January 1617) was a German-born Dutch printmaker, draftsman, and painter. He was the leading Dutch engraver of the early Baroque period, or Northern Mannerism, lauded for his sophisticated technique, technical mastership and "exuberance" of his compositions. According to A. Hyatt Mayor, Goltzius "was the last professional engraver who drew with the authority of a good painter and the last who invented many pictures for others to copy". In the middle of his life he also began to produce paintings.

Golub, Leon

Leon Golub (January 23, 1922 – August 8, 2004) was an American painter. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, where he also studied, receiving his BA at the University of Chicago in 1942, and his BFA and MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1949 and 1950, respectively. He was married to and collaborated with the artist Nancy Spero (August 24, 1926 – October 18, 2009). Their son Stephen Golub was an economics professor at Swarthmore College. Their son Philip Golub is Professor of International and Comparative Politics at the American University of Paris and was a longstanding contributing editor of the influential journal Le Monde diplomatique. Their youngest son Paul Golub is a theater director and acting teacher working in France.
