Goldin, Leon

Leon Goldin (1923–2009) was a post-war American painter and printmaker who worked in the tradition of abstract expressionism and high modernism. Goldin was born in 1923, earning his BFA at the Art Institute of Chicago and later his MFA at the University of Iowa, where he studied intaglio printmaking under Mauricio Lasansky. In 1953 he won a Fulbright Scholarship in Painting. In 1955 he was awarded the prestigious Prix de Rome, allowing him to work and study as a Fellow at the American Academy of Rome between 1955 and 1958. In 1959, Goldin returned to New York, where he was supported by a Guggenheim Fellowship. From 1964 to 1992, Goldin worked as a professor of art at Columbia University and later as the department chair. During this period up until his death in 2009, Goldin was represented by Kraushaar Galleries in New York. In 1971, he was listed in the Dictionary of Contemporary American Artists. Goldin was affiliated with the Bay Area Figurative Movement between 1950 and 1954, during which time he pioneered work in Color Field and unconventional printmaking techniques. Goldin, Nan

Nancy Goldin (born 1953) is an American photographer and activist. Her work explores in snapshot-style the emotions of the individual, in intimate relationships, and the bohemian LGBT subcultural communities, especially dealing with the devastating HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1980s. Her most notable work is The Ballad of Sexual Dependency. In the slideshow and monograph (1986) Goldin portrayed her chosen "family", meanwhile documenting the post-punk and gay subcultures. She is a founding member of the advocacy group P.A.I.N. (Prescription Addiction Intervention Now) against the opioid epidemic. She lives and works in New York City.

Goldsmith, Oliver

Oliver Goldsmith (10 November 1728 – 4 April 1774) was an Anglo-Irish poet, novelist, playwright, and hack writer. He produced literary works in a variety of genres and is regarded among the most versatile writers of the Georgian era. His works are known for their realistic depictions of British society, and his comedy plays for the English stage are considered second in importance only to those of playwright William Shakespeare. Credited with introducing sentimentalism in English literature in 18th-century Great Britain, several of Goldsmith's publications are popular classics of the period, including his only novel, The Vicar of Wakefield (1766), and the comedy play She Stoops to Conquer (1773). He wrote the play The Good-Natur'd Man (1768) and is additionally thought by commentators such as Washington Irving to have written the children's novel The History of Little Goody Two-Shoes (1765), one of the earliest classical works of children's literature. Goldsmith also produced a number of poems during his career, such as The Deserted Village (1770), and contributed to the flourishing of idyllic poetry during the Georgian era. Goldston, Bill

Earth is an American rock band originally based in Olympia, Washington and led by the guitarist Dylan Carlson. Initially active between 1989 and 1997, their early work is characterized by heavily distorted guitar, drones, and lengthy, minimalist song structures; their 1993 debut album Earth 2 is recognized as a pioneering work of the drone metal genre. The band resurfaced in the early 2000s, with their subsequent output reducing the distortion and incorporating elements of country, jazz rock, and folk. Earth's current lineup consists of Carlson and drummer Adrienne Davies. Often Bill Herzog is on bass as well as other Earth members, past present and future.
