Franchoys the Younger, Lucas

Lucas Franchoys the Younger or Lucas Franchoys II (28 June 1616 in Mechelen – 3 April 1681 in Mechelen) was a Flemish Baroque painter from Mechelen, who painted numerous altarpieces and portraits in a style reminiscent of Anthony van Dyck.

Francia, Francesco

Francesco Francia, whose real name was Francesco Raibolini (1447 – 5 January 1517) was an Italian painter, goldsmith, and medallist from Bologna, who was also director of the city mint. He may have trained with Marco Zoppo and was first mentioned as a painter in 1486. His earliest known work is the Felicini Madonna, which is signed and dated 1494. He worked in partnership with Lorenzo Costa, and was influenced by Ercole de' Roberti's and Costa's style. After 1505 he was influenced more by Perugino and Raphael. He had a large workshop and trained Marcantonio Raimondi, Ludovico Marmitta, and several other artists; he produced niellos, in which Raimondi first learnt to engrave, soon excelling his master, according to Vasari. Raphael's Santa Cecilia is supposed to have produced such a feeling of inferiority in Francia that it caused him to die of depression. However, as his friendship with Raphael is now well-known, this story has been discredited. He died in Bologna. His sons Giacomo Francia and Giulio Francia were also artists.

Francia, Francesco Maria

Francesco Maria di Francia (19 February 1853 - 22 December 1913) was an Italian Roman Catholic priest and the founder of the Capuchin Sisters of the Sacred Heart. He formed a close bond with his older brother (canonized in 2004) and the two studied together under a priest uncle. He tried music after experiencing doubts about his vocation but continued his studies leading to his ordination in Messina where he would spend his entire life ministering to people. He aided the ill during a cholera epidemic while in 1908 aiding in rescue and reconstruction efforts following a violent earthquake. Di Francia also taught moral theological studies to seminarians for a time before being given a role in archdiocesan curial affairs some months before his death from a heart attack. The beatification process for the late priest opened in the mid-1980s (he became titled as a Servant of God) after his order lobbied for a cause to be opened in the Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela archdiocese. The cause culminated on 19 March 2019 after Pope Francis acknowledged his life of heroic virtue and so titled him as Venerable.

Francia, Jacopo

Giacomo Raibolini (1484 – 3 January 1557), also called Giacomo Francia or Jacopo Francia, was an Italian painter and engraver of the Renaissance period. Francia was born in Bologna as elder son of Francesco Raibolini (Francesco Francia), and like his father was also called il Francia. His father and brother Giulio Raibolini were also artists. Francia was trained by his father in painting and goldsmithing, and acted as his assistant. In 1517, the year of his father's death, he and his brother, Giulio, assumed responsibility for the family business and together executed many church altarpieces, identifiable by the initials (I I) of their Latinized names (Iacobus and Iulius). Late in life Giacomo came under the influence of Dosso Dossi. He died in Bologna in 1567. Giacomo's earliest known work is the Virgin in Glory with Saints Peter, Mary Magdalene, Francis, Martha and Six Nuns (after 1515; Pinacoteca Nazionale, Bologna, ). In this painting, as in the Saints Jerome, Margaret and Francis (1518; Madrid, Prado) and the Nativity (1519; San Giovanni Evangelista, Parma), both dated and signed by both brothers, there appear, in addition to the influence of their father, echoes of the monumental...
