American, born 1975

Myra Greene is an American artist who has worked on a number of projects, mostly photographic. Among them are Hairy Projects, The Beautiful Ones, Character Recognition, Self Portraits, My White Friends, and Sketches for Something. Through her work, Greene prompts thought-provoking questions about how individuals are often judged based on skin color and other physical characteristics rather than on their character. Greene's introspective and race-conscious collections have been exhibited in galleries and exhibitions across the country and have gained national recognition in the media, including a New York Times spotlight piece for her collection "My White Friends" in 2012.

Greenleaf, Benjamin

American

American, 1769 - 1821

Benjamin Greenleaf (January 13, 1769 - January 10, 1821) was an American portraitist, active throughout New England during his career. Greenleaf was born in Hull, Massachusetts, son of Mary and John Greenleaf; long identified with the educator of the same name, he was established as a different individual in 1981. On November 20, 1799, he married Abigail Greenleaf Rhoades (sometimes given as Rhodes) of Dorchester in that state. Four years later he produced his earliest known portrait, that of his great-uncle Jacob Goold, a resident of Weymouth. This work is in oil on canvas mounted on board, the medium in which his earliest paintings were created. He was active at least until 1818, and is known to have traveled extensively throughout New England, particularly the vicinity of Boston; he is also traced in New Hampshire, in the communities of Hanover and Hopkinton, and in the Maine towns of Bath, Phippsburg, Paris, and Portland. A diary entry from Samuel Adams of Bath, dated 1816, suggests that he might have received lodging in at least partial exchange for his painting, and he is known to have been active there the following year as well. Little is known about his business transactions...

Green, Renée

American, born 1959

Renée Green (born October 25, 1959) is an American artist, writer, and filmmaker. Her pluralistic practice spans a broad range of media including sculpture, architecture, photography, prints, video, film, websites, and sound, which normally converge in highly layered and complex installations. She works to draw on cultural anthropology as well as social history, making her works well-researched and many times involving collaborators. Some of the topics she has covered include Sarah Baartman, the African slave trade, and hip hop in Germany. In 2014, Green published Other Planes of There: Selected Writings with Duke University Press, a work that compiles a substantial collection of her work written between 1981 and 2010.
