Gossaert, Jan

Jan Gossaert (c. 1478 – 1 October 1532) was a French-speaking painter from the Low Countries also known as Jan Mabuse (the name he adopted from his birthplace, Maubeuge) or Jennyn van Hennegouwe (Hainaut), as he called himself when he matriculated in the Guild of Saint Luke, at Antwerp, in 1503. He was one of the first painters of Dutch and Flemish Renaissance painting to visit Italy and Rome, which he did in 1508–09, and a leader of the style known as Romanism, which brought elements of Italian Renaissance painting to the north, sometimes with a rather awkward effect. He achieved fame across at least northern Europe, and painted religious subjects, including large altarpieces, portraits and mythological subjects. From at least 1508 he was apparently continuously employed, or at least retained, by quasi-royal patrons, mostly members of the extended Habsburg family, heirs to the Valois Duchy of Burgundy. These were Philip of Burgundy, Adolf of Burgundy, Christian II of Denmark when in exile, and Mencía de Mendoza, Countess of Nassau, third wife of Henry III of Nassau-Breda. John Gossage (born 1946) is an American photographer, noted for his artist's books and other publications using his photographs to explore under-recognised elements of the urban environment such as abandoned tracts of land, debris and garbage, and graffiti, and themes of surveillance, memory and the relationship between architecture and power.

Gothein, Werner

George Frederick of Baden-Durlach (30 January 1573 – 24 September 1638) was Margrave of Baden-Durlach from 1604 until his abdication in 1622. He also ruled Baden-Baden. He was the third son of margrave Charles II of Baden-Durlach and his second wife, Anna of Veldenz. He was the youngest of eight children and was only four years old when his father died. He succeeded his brother Ernest Frederick as margrave in 1604. He also continued his brother's occupation of Baden-Baden. George Frederick was a prominent member of the Protestant Union. He raised an army of 12,000 men at the beginning of the Thirty Years' War in 1618. When Catholic League forces under General Tilly approached Baden in 1622 (Palatinate campaign), he marched against them, but came too late for the Battle of Mingolsheim. Setting off to pursue the retreating Catholics, he was defeated at the Battle of Wimpfen, and his army was destroyed, a few days later. In 1627 he joined the Danish army. He died at Strasbourg in 1638.

Goto, Joseph

Joseph Goto (1916–1994) was an American sculptor, best known for his abstract-expressionist welded steel sculptures. He was born in Hilo, Hawaii, and learned welding in the United States Army during the Second World War. In the late 1940s, Goto studied sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago. He taught at Brandeis University, Carnegie Mellon University, the Rhode Island School of Design, and the University of Michigan. Goto's sculptures range from table-top size to large scale public works. No. 24 in the collection of the Honolulu Museum of Art is typical of his small-scale works. The Art Institute of Chicago, the Butler Institute of American Art (Youngstown, OH), the Honolulu Museum of Art, the Kresge Art Museum (East Lansing), the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (Kansas City, MO), and the Rhode Island School of Design are among the public collections holding works by Joseph Goto.
