Right Hand

Provenance

Acquired 1907 or 1908 from the artist by Mr. and Mrs. John W. Simpson, New York;[1] gift 1942 to NGA. [1] There is only one mention of "little sketches" in the Simpson correspondence with Rodin (Musée Rodin Archives, Paris). In a letter of 25 February 1911, Kate Simpson spoke of a visitor who particularly admired the "little sketches...souvenirs of my wonderful summers in Paris and Versailles." The Simpsons spent the summers of 1907 and 1908 in Versailles, so perhaps this hand, as well as the four plaster hands (NGA 1942.9.26-29) and the plaster foot (NGA 1942.9.30) were gifts of these visits.
