Van Rijckevorsel commissioned the Belgian painter Fernand Khnopff to paint portraits of himself and his wife Maria, the artist’s aunt. The poetic quality of Khnopff’s paintings had won him popularity as a portraitist among the Brussels bourgeoisie in 1888.
