Description
This baker’s couple from Leiden proudly proffer their freshly baked loaves and rolls. An old inscription on the back of the painting gives their names. The boy is also mentioned: he is the painter’s son. He may blow the horn to let people know the bread is ready. Jan Steen combined several genres in a single painting – it serves as a family portrait, a still life of bread, and a portrayal of a profession all at once.
