Description

Verster brought the flower still-life genre to a new, modern height. The emphasis no longer lay on creating lavish displays of exotic blossoms, but rather on portraying light and the natural process of growth and decay. This still life is reminiscent of an autumn bouquet. The wilted yellowed leaves, the translucent petals and the black glass vase afforded the painter every opportunity to experiment with the light.
