Description
In 1858, the then 28-year-old Dutch painter Maurits van den Kerkhoff moved to Java, an island in Indonesia, which was a Dutch colony at the time. Van den Kerkhoff painted Javanese landscapes in a European manner. All the elements are rendered in detail, but with little regard for reality. The light is evenly distributed, giving the scene an air of artificiality.
