Description

Two rowing boats on the water. Gao Qipei (1660 - 1734). China, c. 1700. Colours and ink on paper. The finger painter Gao Qipei experimented with techniques of painting. 'One should allow the hand to do the painting', he remarked. He was fascinated by the unpredictability of the line produced by the finger or the nail. The inscription on the right reads:'The sky is cradled in the azure waves, the flower harbour is patterned with colour, the oars swish to and fro in the realm of perfumes. Qipei'
