Description

A merchant had himself portrayed against a background of merchant ships and barrels. These refer to his trading activities. The enslaved boy with a parasol emphasizes his status. Many Europeans migrated to Surinam in the 18th century, hoping to make a quick fortune in trade or on the sugar and coffee plantations.
