Description

The sitter’s identity is unknown. Based on the headgear (calotte) he is wearing, it has been assumed that he is a clergyman. However, this is not certain, as people from other walks of life also wore similar skullcaps. In his final days, Hals created an entire series of smaller portraits of this kind.
