Description

Attributed to Carel Fabritius (1622 - 1654). The beheading of John the Baptist, c. 1645. On the right we see Salomé who - according to the biblical account - is rewarded for her dancing with the head of John the Baptist on a platter. It is not certain who the artist was. The free painting style and the contrasts between light and dark point to one of Rembrandt's pupils, perhaps Carel Fabritius. Purchased in 1801 as a Rembrandt.
