Description

Aelbert Cuyp (1620 - 1691). Landscape with herdsmen and cattle, c. 1655. This landscape with its castle ruins evokes an idyllic atmosphere, reinforced by the contre jour effect. Cuyp never visited Italy, but many of his landscapes have a Mediterranean flavour, with mountains bathed in a golden sunlight. He was inspired by the work of Jan Both, who lived in Italy for a time and painted so-called Italianizing landscapes. Bequest of L. Dupper (Dordrecht), 1870.
