Description

Jan van de Cappelle (1626 - 1679). Ships at anchor on a quiet sea, c. 1655. From the vantage point of an inland harbour, the painting presents a view of open sea. Here the artist was interested in recreating the atmosphere of the scene, rather than depicting a specific place or happening. From the collection of the Empress Eugenie Bonaparte (Paris) and others. Gift of Mr. and Mrs. I. de Bruijn-van der Leeuw (Muri near Bern), 1961.
