Description

Environmental concerns arose in the second half of the 19th century. As people witnessed the increasing exploitation of natural resources, there was also a growing perception that nature could be fragile and that the wilderness should be preserved. In paintings from this era, nature is no longer more powerful than humans. Instead, it actually appears smaller and less impressive. The human presence is more visible.
