Description

Jan Baptist Weenix, 1621 - 1660. A dog and a cat near a disembowelled deer, c. 1650. A roebuck, the result of a successful hunt, has been hung by one leg and cut open. The knife is still lying on the table, alongside the entrails. The scene is enlivened by the dog, who springs forward in the direction of the hissing cat. While Jan Baptist W eenix painted mainly landscapes and townscapes with figures, he also did a small number of still lifes, some of which focused on the hunt. In the museum since 1800, among the earliest works purchased
