The French diplomat, soldier, and spy Chevalier(ère) d’Éon (1728–1810) lived 50 years as a man and then 30 years as a woman, becoming a celebrity at the time. In this portrait, d’Éon presents as a woman and supporter of the French revolution, including a cockade on her hat. D’Éon is one of the few historical figures known to have lived beyond traditional gender boundaries.
