Description

De Lairesse painted this ceiling for the Great Hall of Soestdijk Palace, which William III used as his hunting lodge at the time. The scene of Diana, the goddess of the hunt, alludes to this. De Lairesse extended the architecture of the hall with this illusionistic painting of a richly decorated dome. The decorative programme of the hall thus constituted a unity, an ambition that would set the tone for art of the 18th century.
