Tankard

Description

Tankards of this form were made toward the end of the 1600s in various port cities rimming the Baltic Sea. This example is enriched with a detailed scene of Moses striking the rock, executed in Augsburg, Germany, in about 1675–78.

Provenance

said to have been in the collection of the Russian Imperial Court until the 1920s. (Paul Drey Gallery, New York).
