Madonna and Child

Description

This relief is one of four produced for the ciborium (canopy) erected by Cardinal Guillaume d'Estouteville over the high altar of the church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. The ciborium was taken apart in 1747 and the other three panels--Christ Blessing, The Annunciation, and Saints Peter and Paul--were set into the walls of the sacristy.

by 1461 - after 1839 Santa Maria Maggiore (Rome, Italy), dismantled in 1747, components moved to the Capitolo Liberiano after 1839; before 1890 - 1910 Count Gregory Stroganoff, 1829-1910 (Rome, Italy), by inheritance to his daughter, Maria Gregorievna Scerbatoff, 1910; 1910 Maria Gregorievna Scerbatoff, died 1920, conveyed all rights of inheritance to her son and daughter, Vladimir and Aleksandra Scherbatoff, 1910; 1910-20 Vladimir and Aleksandra Scherbatoff, died 1920, by inheritance to the wife of Vladimir Scherbatoff and their children, Elena Petrovna Scerbatov, Olga Vladimirovna, Maria Vladimirovna, 1920,; 1920-28 Princess Elena Petrovna Scerbatov, and their children, Princess Olga Vladimirovna and Princess Maria Vladimirovna, sold through Giacomo Nunes and Harold W. Parsons, to the Cleveland Museum of Art, 1928.
