T. Schiff, his estate sale, Hôtel Drouot, Paris, 21-22 March, 1905, no. 129, ill., as school of Jan [van] Scorel, for 1,600 fr. to Steindecker [according to annotated catalogue at Cleveland Museum of Art]. Dr. Benedict & Co., Berlin, 1930. Van Diemen & Co., Berlin and New York, 1930 [Van Diemen and Benedict probably owned the picture together; both listed as owners in Cologne 1930; Friedländer’s photos at the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague, are annotated Benedict / IV.1930 and Van Diemen / Amerika…IX.1930]. Adolph Caspar Miller, Washington, D.C. (died 1953), probably by the early 1930s, shortly after it was exported to America; bequeathed by him to the Art Institute, with his widow, Mary Sprague Miller (died 1957) retaining life interest.
