Bottle

Description

Marie Zimmermann was a pioneering jeweler and metalsmith who employed a range of materials in her globally inspired artistic practice.

This bottle exemplifies Zimmerman’s ability to combine the sleek lines of modernism—in the refined body of the vessel—with her interest in Chinese art—in the lapis, jade, and metal stopper. It was made when she began expanding her output beyond jewelry into decorative objects for the home.

Marie Zimmermann (1879–1972), 1916-22; by descent to her grandnephew John C. Zimmermann III and his family, NH and FL, 1972; sold to the Art Institute of Chicago, 2019.
