Description
Marvin Lipofsky made glassworks like Pilchuck Summer Series 1988–1990 #15 in multiple stages. First, he worked with other glassblowers on the “hot work,” creating large bubbles until he liked one. Together, they plunged the semi-molten bubble into a wooden mold, bending and folding, and sometimes further sculpting the artwork with wooden tools. Lipofsky then undertook “cold work” alone back in his studio; he achieved the undulating cut-outs and opaque surface of this sculpture by carving, grinding, and sandblasting the surface of the glass.
