Table Cover

Description

Ernst Ludwig, Grand Duke of Hesse, established an artists’ colony in Darmstadt in 1899. It was heavily influenced by the British Arts and Crafts and European Art Nouveau movements. Architect and designer Joseph Maria Olbrich created individual artists’ homes, as well as furnishings, for the colony. He may have designed this table cover, as its intricate abstract pattern is typical of his work.
