Agandecca, French Warrior, Starno, after The Apotheosis of French Heroes Who Died for Their Country during the War for Liberty

Description

This lithograph renders a detail from a large-scale painting completed by Anne-Louis Girodet de Roucy-Trioson in 1801. Girodet’s monumental work depicts the legendary Scottish bard Ossian and his followers welcoming French military heroes into paradise. This lithograph captures a particularly tense moment: Ossian’s enemy Starno, at right, grasps the hair of his daughter, Agandecca, as she tries to reach the victorious French soldiers. The soldier at center deflects Starno’s outstretched blade and stabs him through the eye.
