Rufus W. Griswold [1815-1857], in 1854.[1] James C. McGuire [1812-1888], Washington;[2] bequest September 1888 to the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington; acquired 2015 by the National Gallery of Art. [1] Griswold lent the painting to an exhibition at the National Academy of Design in New York in 1854; he was an anthologist, editor, poet, and critic. [2] McGuire, a major collector, was one of the original trustees of the Corcoran Gallery of Art.
