Gift from the artist to Erminnie Adelle Platt Smith [1836-1886].[1] Private Collection, Northern California. (sale, Butterfield & Butterfield, San Francisco, 12 March 1987, no. 3188). (Montgomery Gallery, San Francisco);[2] purchased 1987 by Mrs. Andrew Wyeth; given as gift to Nicholas Wyeth; given as gift to his wife Jane Wyeth, New York;[2] gift 2007 to NGA.
[1] An inscription lower right reads To Mrs. Ermine Smith / from her friend / Geo. De F. Brush.
[2] The painting was included in an exhibition at Montgomery Gallery from 13 October – 27 November 1981 in which all the works were for sale ( _Visions of the Last Frontier_, no. 23, copy of catalogue entry in NGA curatorial file).
[2] Provenance provided by Jane Wyeth. An undated, handwritten label pasted on a square of Christmas-themed wrapping paper, which was attached the backboard, reads “For Nickie / with love / Mommy & Daddy” (NGA curatorial files).
